Two adult friends crouch beside red- and blue-handled granite stones after a close curling finish in a frosted winter hall.

A close curling finish fills the winter hall

Published · Updated

A close curling finish brings two friends down to the level of the granite stones. One man points toward the red-handled stone while the other smiles across at him, his hands resting on his own knees. Both hold balanced crouches on the scuffed ice. The stones sit close together within a large red circle, giving their quiet comparison a clear focus.

The winter hall rises around them in a sequence of glass arches and dark metal ribs. Frost softens the glazing, with snow-covered trees visible beyond it. Dormant vines follow the posts, and warm wall lanterns add small pools of amber light. A bench and resting brooms at the side suggest the pause that follows the end of a game.

The smooth stone surfaces contrast with knitted fabric, practical boots and the scratched playing surface. Reflections stretch gently across the ice without hiding its texture. No large crowd or scoreboard competes with the two friends’ attention. The photograph finds the pleasure of the game in its aftermath: a close result, an exchanged grin and enough time to look carefully at where the stones finally stopped.
