A conker duel wakes the chestnut courtyard
Published · Updated
A conker duel brings a burst of laughter to the chestnut courtyard. One friend holds a brown chestnut still at the end of its long string while the other draws his own conker into a swing. Both watch the small target between them. Their different stances make the game easy to follow: one player waits, the other turns his shoulders in anticipation.
The enormous tree above them has deeply ridged bark and a spreading crown of yellow leaves. Oversized willow sculptures hang from its branches, their curved ribs holding brown cloth forms that echo the real chestnuts scattered below. The visible ropes and open framework give these decorations a handmade presence within the living canopy. An ochre wall encloses the far side of the garden.
Wet bricks form overlapping circles under the players’ boots, catching warm reflections between loose copper leaves. Burgundy checks and a mustard overshirt repeat the colors of the season without blending into the background. Small fallen nuts near the camera connect the game to the tree overhead. The photograph finds its energy in this mixture of a familiar childhood pastime, adult friendship and an unusually elaborate autumn setting.
