A courtyard potluck passes the bowl around
Published · Updated
A courtyard potluck brings three neighbors together around a small wooden table. A woman in a gingham blouse passes a salad bowl to the older man opposite her, their hands supporting the vessel from either side. The friend seated between them holds a basket of bread and laughs along with the conversation.
The table is set with pale ceramics, amber glasses and loose linen napkins. Slices of bread and a small vase of flowers fill the spaces between the plates. The simple food stays close at hand, allowing the gathering to feel informal. Their different layers of gingham, linen and textured tailoring give each person a clear place in the group.
String lights span the narrow courtyard between painted wooden houses. Warm windows and climbing vines soften the walls, while ferns spill toward the worn brick paving. The last blue of the evening remains visible above the roofs. The close setting gathers the friends around one shared gesture, with the passing bowl connecting their hands, expressions and conversation across the table.
