A Lantern Raised to the Stone Giant

Published · Updated

A colossal figure of grey stone rises above the pines, its broad shoulders almost lost among the dark branches. Moss softens the broken edges of its granite slabs, and small trees grow from cracks along its upper back. The head tilts toward the clearing below. Its angular recesses remain empty and dark, with moonlight tracing the rough surfaces around them.

On a rocky rise in the foreground, a boy in a red wool jacket holds up a small kerosene lantern. His knitted hat and sturdy boots catch the warm glow. A scruffy dog stands close beside him, facing the same immense shape. Both are seen from behind, their quiet stance giving the encounter a feeling of trust rather than alarm.

The full moon hangs in a clear patch of sky above the giant’s shoulder. Cool light touches the highest stone edges while the lantern illuminates thin trunks and low branches near the boy. Repeated layers of pines establish the distance between them. The photograph balances a tiny warm light with the enormous, weathered presence of the forest figure.
