A meteor streaks above the quiet tidal pools

Published · Updated

A meteor draws a thin bright line across the blue night sky above quiet tidal pools. Its small pale head and fading trail stand apart from the finer stars around them. In the largest foreground pool, a faint reflected streak appears between dark rock edges. The moment is brief, but the calm water holds enough of the sky to connect the event overhead with the shore below.

Tall basalt columns rise along the left side of the photograph, their polygonal faces and stepped ends emerging slowly from the darkness. Horizontal fractures and wet patches break the surfaces into smaller details. Lower ledges extend toward the sea, enclosing pools of different sizes between irregular black rims. A narrow distant swell catches a little light near the horizon.

The scene keeps much of its natural darkness, allowing the closest wet rock to show only scattered highlights. Still water mirrors sections of the columns as well as the stars, adding depth beneath the open sky. The photograph balances a single moving point of light with the steady shapes of stone, pools and calm sea, without crowding the night with extra spectacle.
