A hermit crab climbs the tidal ridge
Published · Updated
A hermit crab climbs a low tidal ridge beneath clear blue water. Its cream shell leans over a cluster of jointed legs while the larger front claw finds purchase on the black rock. Two dark-tipped eye stalks rise above the shell opening, and a long fine antenna reaches across the water ahead. The animal is close enough for the rough shell ridges and small bumps on its claw to remain distinct.
Loose pale grains gather in the hollows between the darker stones. Amber seaweed grows to either side, with more low rocks receding across the pool floor. This uneven route makes the crab's step feel deliberate: the shell is a substantial load moving over a very small obstacle.
Sunlight passes through the rippled surface overhead and draws shifting pale lines across the shell, sand and stone. The near ridge falls into softer shadow at the bottom of the frame, while the background becomes progressively blue and less distinct. That change in clarity gives the shallow pool a strong sense of depth.
