A mudskipper opens its fin above the tidal mud
Published · Updated
A mudskipper opens its fin above the tidal mud, making a broad fan from the thin rays along its back. Its raised eyes look across the shallow water while the blunt head remains close to the surface. Small pale spots break the olive-brown color of the skin.
Paired pectoral fins support the fish on the muddy ridge, and its tapering body continues into a broad tail. A nearby puddle catches a partial reflection between tiny holes and wet ridges in the mud. Mangrove roots recede behind the animal, giving the low close view a setting of repeated upright shapes without hiding the fish or its distinctive display.
