A paper leaf reaches the Halloween mailbox
Published · Updated
A paper leaf is almost inside the Halloween mailbox. The little girl reaches toward its open door while her father holds her securely beside the post. Both look at the small delivery with easy smiles. Her pink quilted jacket and pale tights stand out against his olive corduroy coat, while the leaf brings another bright orange shape into their shared activity.
Mesh ribbons wrap the tall black post in lime, purple and orange. Striped bows and small dark bats add sharper outlines among the soft loops. Water beads on the curved metal roof, and the lowered mailbox door makes a shallow platform beneath the child’s hand. Each layer of decoration stays close to this ordinary piece of street furniture.
Golden leaves scatter across the damp sidewalk and lawn behind them. Brick houses, dark shutters and broad tree trunks give the neighborhood a familiar autumn setting. Small pumpkins and yellow flowers sit near the base of the post. The tall composition connects the father’s grounded stance, his daughter’s careful reach and the elaborate decoration without losing the quiet humor of posting a leaf.
