A skipping stone breaks the mirror cove

Published · Updated

A skipping stone breaks the smooth surface of the mirror cove while a father and daughter follow its path. The father’s open hand remains at the end of his throw. Beside him, the girl points toward the little splash with a delighted expression. Her pink patterned dress, dark leggings and boots bring a cheerful note to the quiet shore without drawing attention away from their shared game.

Immense rounded granite rocks rise from the clear turquoise water. Their broad curved faces carry seams, weathered patches and narrow shadows, making the scale of the cove immediately apparent. Smaller pebbles beneath the shallow foreground water remain visible, while distant cliffs fade into pale coastal haze. The two figures occupy only a small part of this sheltered landscape.

The action is held in a brief interval between the airborne pebble and the widening rings below it. Reflections soften the heavy rocks and double the cool blue-green color of the water. This combination of a tiny moving object, attentive faces and enormous stone forms gives an everyday family pastime a memorable setting. The photograph keeps the shore, people and distant opening connected in one generous view.
