A Tiny Giraffe Carved from the Pencil Tip

Published · Updated

A tiny giraffe stands at the tip of a sharpened pencil, carved from the same dark graphite as its small pedestal. Four slender legs support the body, and a long narrow neck rises toward the little ears and rounded horns. Fine flat cuts catch silver highlights across the surface. The animal's silhouette remains easy to read despite its delicate scale. Below it, the sharpened cedar widens into the ochre-painted pencil, with rough fibers and pale wood dust visible along the taper.

A worn brass clamp holds the pencil upright on a wooden bench. Small graphite fragments have collected on the jaws, and a metal carving tool rests out of focus behind it. Warm daylight from a nearby window gives the dark carving a soft shine without hiding its tool marks. Pots and workshop surfaces fade into the background, leaving the unusual pencil tip sharply defined. This close photograph rewards a patient look at the miniature feet, the carved planes of the neck and the simple connection between a familiar everyday object and an intricate little sculpture.
