A topiary flock gathers in the evening garden
Published · Updated
A topiary flock gathers in the evening garden, with terracotta sheep heads nestled at the fronts of rounded clipped shrubs. The small clay faces have long muzzles, sideways ears and simple curled foreheads. Each green mound stays rooted in the planting bed, making the playful animals part of the living border.
Warm evening lamps pick out leaf tips and the rough matte clay along the lawn edge. Farther shapes recede toward autumn shrubs and a low stone wall beneath the blue dusk sky. Fallen leaves lie across the dark soil nearby, joining the sculpted heads and neatly trimmed foliage to a relaxed, richly planted garden setting.
