A walking spring takes the painted stairs
Published · Updated
A walking spring bends across two of the painted stairs while the brothers watch from the landing above. One end rests on a coral tread and the other meets the teal step below. The silver coils open into a long arch, catching thin bright reflections along their edges. A soft reflection beneath the lower end makes the small toy's contact with the polished paint easy to see.
The younger boy leans forward with his hands resting on his knees. His brother sits close beside him, smiling toward the same movement. A pale blue shirt and cuffed jeans contrast with the older brother's cream striped knit and olive trousers. Brown lace-up shoes and navy canvas shoes remain planted on the broad tread beneath them.
The hall gives the game a rich setting. Leaded glass admits warm afternoon light beside berry-colored wallpaper and framed pictures. A narrow patterned runner crosses the upper steps, while coral, ochre, teal and lilac paint brighten the lower flight. Scuffed edges and the dark wooden landing keep the room tactile and lived in around this familiar moment of absorbed play.
