Accordion music reaches the pier
Published · Updated
Accordion music gives this quiet corner of the pier its small gathering. An older player sits beneath a weathered timber shelter with a marbled red button accordion open across his lap. His hands rest at either end of the instrument as the brown bellows spread between them. Beside him, a white-haired man in a green coat smiles toward the player with a folded newspaper in his hands and one toe lifted from the boards.
The pier shelter frames a wide strip of gray-blue water. A railing runs behind the men, with a distant headland softened by cloud and coastal haze. The musician's dark flat cap, navy coat and brown trousers fit the muted setting, while the accordion provides a rich patch of color. Daylight reaches both faces gently beneath the roof.
This portrait photograph works for themes of informal performance, listening and everyday companionship. The two figures occupy a real stretch of public space, with the sea and sturdy timber structure giving their shared pause room to breathe.
