American oystercatchers cross the shell bar

Published · Updated

American oystercatchers search an oyster shell bar beside calm salt marsh water. The nearer bird lowers its long orange bill toward an open shell, keeping its pale pink feet spread over the uneven surface. Its black head and white underside make a bold shape against the broken gray and cream shells. Fine brown feather patterns remain visible across its folded wing.

A second bird steps through the shallows behind it, adding a different pose and a clear sense of distance. The two bright bills and orange-ringed eyes repeat small warm accents across the cool foreground. Wet shells catch irregular highlights, with dark water gathering between their ridged edges.

The tidal channel opens into a broad, quiet marsh beyond the birds. Golden-green grass follows the waterline beneath a low horizon, while soft clouds break around the rising sun. Its reflection stretches across the still surface without overwhelming the detail of the habitat. The low viewpoint gives the feeding birds a strong presence while retaining the open sky, shoreline texture and spacious coastal setting.
