Bee Bole Wall Shelters the Garden Skeps

Published · Updated

A bee bole wall shelters straw skeps within deep arched recesses. Three domed coils of straw rest on solid stone shelves, each with a small dark opening near its base. One niche remains empty, revealing the rough masonry at the back. Red brick rings outline the arches and bring a warmer color into the gray stone wall.

The cottage herb garden fills the space below with lavender spikes, broad sage leaves, rosemary and small pale flowers. A rounded clipped shrub anchors the near corner. Beside the planting, a narrow brick path curves away with rainwater shining between its uneven edges. Moss softens the joints and the top of the wall, adding another layer of green.

A whitewashed cottage rises beyond the niches beneath a thick thatched roof. Flowering branches spread across the upper left, while evening light enters from the opposite side. That light catches the straw ridges and wet path, leaving the recesses cool and shaded. The whole garden remains visible around the unusual wall, showing how practical little shelters can become a repeated architectural rhythm within a richly planted place.
