Blue kyanite blades cross the milky quartz

Published · Updated

Blue kyanite rises through milky quartz in a sharply detailed mineral specimen. The longest crystal blades lean across the center, with smaller fragments extending at different angles around them. Deep denim-blue bands run lengthwise through paler surfaces. Fine silver-grey striations catch the side light and emphasize the flattened shape of each blade.

The crystal ends are uneven and stepped rather than smoothly pointed. White chips and thin mineral layers cling to their edges. Between the blue forms, translucent quartz breaks into rough facets, some clear enough to admit light and others cloudy with pale inclusions. Small brown-grey areas of the underlying matrix remain visible near the base.

The specimen rests directly on a warm limestone slab. A narrow contact shadow follows its irregular lower edge, while the porous front of the slab adds another rough texture beneath the crystals. Behind it, a soft taupe wall and a bright architectural edge frame the object without competing for attention. The contrast between cool blue mineral and warm cream stone makes the varied surfaces easy to follow within the tall, still composition.
