Brick icehouse vault gathers the daylight
Published · Updated
A brick icehouse vault curves over an empty circular chamber. Concentric courses of red-brown masonry draw the eye upward toward the center of the dome, while the lower wall continues down to a dark stone floor. Pale mineral traces and small green patches interrupt the brickwork, giving the enclosed space a varied surface rather than a uniform pattern.
An open oak door sits within a rounded passage on the left. A short flight of stone steps rises beyond it toward daylight and a glimpse of grass. The cool light entering there mixes gently with a small warm wall lamp. Together they reveal the thickness of the entrance arch and the worn edges of individual bricks.
A curved ledge follows the wall above the lower floor. Simple iron posts and a continuous rail separate the walking surface from the chamber, with clear anchor plates at their bases. A small drain sits near the center below. The vertical view joins dome, doorway, rail and floor in one composition, making the building’s unusual volume the principal subject.
