A caber toss lifts a long timber pole above a grassy field. The athlete's open hands follow its lower end as the wood begins to turn away from him. A red and charcoal tartan kilt brings a clear pattern into the action, while the low camera makes the height of the pole apparent.

Fair tents and distant spectators form a thin line beneath the green hills. The setting remains large enough to explain the event without pulling attention away from the release. Grain and worn surface details give the timber weight, and the compressed turf grounds the athlete's stance. The photograph catches a demanding movement at the brief instant when the object has left the hands but its outcome is still uncertain.
