The White Cocoon Chair

Published · Updated

A towering white cocoon chair stands beneath the timber roof of a brick hall. Thousands of narrow cable ties form its deep oval bowl, with tightly interlaced rows following the curve from the seat to the tall back. Around the outer edge, loose ends project in every direction. Their small square heads and translucent strips make the familiar material easy to recognise, even at this extraordinary scale.

The smooth inner weave contrasts with the shaggy outline. Sunlight from the arched windows catches individual ties and passes through small gaps, adding pale golden tones to the white shell. Three visible metal feet hold the form above the terracotta tiles. Circular mounting plates and the continuous woven structure give the sculpture a clear physical presence.

An ordinary wooden bench sits quietly against the far wall. Its size helps explain just how large the empty chair is. Long window shadows cross the floor around its base, connecting the intricate object to the solid room. The photograph brings out the surprising richness that can emerge from repeating a small, everyday component.
