The Car Suspended in Its Separate Parts

Published · Updated

An ochre motorcar hangs in separate layers beneath the roof of a vast brick hall. Its curved roof is lifted clear of the open cabin, while doors and rounded fenders spread to either side. Below the body, the engine, steering column and dark chassis reveal the machine’s hidden structure. Fine steel cables connect the pieces to the overhead beams.

The old paint carries small chips and worn edges, contrasting with oily metal, dull fasteners and the tread of the black tyres. Open spaces between the components allow the tall windows and distant workbenches to remain visible through the display. The lowest wheels hover just above the concrete, making the separation clear without losing the familiar outline of a car.

Soft daylight enters through immense arched factory windows. Small wall lamps warm the brickwork, while the floor holds faint reflections and scattered shadows beneath the suspended pieces. A darker wet strip crosses the near foreground. The empty hall gives the installation room to breathe, presenting an ordinary mechanical object as an unusually spacious and carefully supported sculpture.
