Chladni Sand Patterns beneath a Violin Bow

Published · Updated

Chladni sand patterns turn a black vibrating plate into a delicate arrangement of pale loops. Individual grains of white sand gather along curved lines, with a few loose grains remaining between them. A wooden violin bow touches the edge while the demonstrator's other hand stays clear of the plate.

The oblique overhead view includes the square metal surface, its small support and the walnut table beneath it. A dish of spare sand and a folded cloth keep the surrounding workspace simple. Grazing light makes the granular pattern tangible instead of resembling a printed diagram. The scene finds visual drama in a modest physical experiment, where a small gesture at one edge is connected to an intricate pattern across the whole surface.
