The Courtyard of Wooden Lace
Published · Updated
From the shaded veranda, layers of ivory carving frame a small courtyard and its blue timber walls. Pierced leaves, circular rosettes and scalloped edges gather around the windows and steep gables. Their shallow shadows reveal the thickness of the wood, while the tall faceted bay brings a strong vertical shape into the garden.
An apple tree stands close to the porch, its yellow leaves crossing the pale trim. Below it, ferns and low flowers follow a curved brick edge. The path bends toward a simple side gate, giving the enclosed garden a clear route through the planting. A cushioned bench waits beneath the veranda roof.
Sunlight reaches the upper carving and catches the damp bricks, leaving the nearest porch boards and columns in cooler shade. Small worn edges and softened paint keep the intricate design grounded in familiar materials. This photograph suits features about decorative timber, courtyard gardens and welcoming porches.
