A Crochet Coral Reef Fills the Gallery
Published · Updated
Giant red sea fans spread through this brick gallery, their branching lace rising nearly to the timber roof. Beneath them, turquoise cups open into deep stitched hollows edged with soft ivory fringe. Mustard ruffles, pink tubular branches and smaller folded forms gather around their bases. Every surface reveals loops, knots or woven fibres, turning the shapes of a coral reef into a monumental display of textile work. The contrast between airy red fans and dense blue cups gives the installation both height and weight.
A curved pale border follows the display along the hall, leaving a clear route across the dark stone floor. Tall arched windows look toward grey water and admit a cool rainy light, while small lamps pick out the warm threads. The old brick walls and heavy roof beams give the vivid colours a quiet, textured setting. An empty bench beside the windows helps establish the scale. From the nearest fringed cup, the view travels through successive clusters of coral and into the long room, revealing new patterns at each distance.
