The Cyclist in the Empty Square
Published · Updated
The whole square is ready for an evening crowd, yet one woman with a bicycle stands alone on the cobbles. Lanterns glow along the façades, pumpkins light the cinema steps and an empty carousel turns beside the fountain. At the café tables nearest the rooftop viewpoint, coffee still sends up thin wisps of steam. The absence of people becomes more noticeable with every sign that they were expected.
A violet sky settles above worn stone buildings, iron balconies and red tiled roofs. The cinema’s blank marquee shines with rows of warm bulbs, answering the carousel lights across the square. The woman’s burgundy cape and basket of apples give the broad view a small, vivid centre. Curved lines in the cobbles lead past her toward the fountain and darkened side streets. Stone, wicker, wool and painted wood stay distinct beneath the dusk lighting. The high angle lets the viewer search the whole place at once, finding activity everywhere except in the missing crowd.
