Earthstar fungus opens among damp moss

Published · Updated

An earthstar fungus opens across the woodland floor like a small weathered star. Seven uneven outer lobes curl away from a rounded tan center, revealing a thick pale surface edged with soil. The central opening is tiny beside the broad shape around it, and the unusual structure stands out against the darker ground.

Damp moss climbs the space behind the fungus, while wet leaves and a diagonal twig establish its modest size. The textures differ at every level: the center is softly powdery, the outer rind is rough and mottled, and the fallen leaves shine with moisture. Diffuse light makes these distinctions clear without turning the scene into a harsh spotlight.

The vertical composition leaves room above the star for a receding patch of green. That quiet space balances the intricate lower portion and gives the photograph a natural sense of discovery. It suits a woodland background or a collection of close nature observations, with warm earth colors held against a rich field of moss.
