Fairy circles pattern the tawny desert grass
Published · Updated
Fairy circles interrupt a broad plain of tawny grass with patches of bare sand. The nearest clearings show rough edges lined by individual tufts, while the open centers carry small grains and faint surface marks. Their shapes vary from nearly round to stretched ovals, and the spaces between them remain uneven.
Low light arrives from the left, turning the grass tips gold and leaving narrow shadows around the margins. Some circles are large enough to dominate the foreground; others form small dark marks farther away. The repeated pattern continues across gentle changes in the ground without becoming a perfect grid. Warm rust-colored sand contrasts with the paler stems that surround it.
A low violet-brown mountain ridge stretches along the distant horizon. Blue-grey clouds fill most of the sky, with a warm opening near the low sun. The elevated viewpoint shows both the close textures and the extraordinary breadth of the patterned plain. No roads or buildings divide the scene, leaving the changing scale of the circles to carry the eye through the landscape.
