Foot billiards among the cypress waves
Published · Updated
Foot billiards turns this terraced garden into an oversized game board. One friend brings his white sneaker beside the pale ball while the other bends forward to watch its path. The low plum rails make the unusual scale immediately clear. A deep pocket occupies the nearest corner, and several colored balls wait across the textured green playing surface. Both men look toward the game with relaxed, amused expressions.
Behind the court, clipped hedges form long descending bands. Pale stone steps interrupt the planting, connecting different levels beneath tall cypress trees. The narrow upright crowns contrast with the wide horizontal court, while rounded shrubs and white flowers soften the formal lines. A wooded hillside continues into the distance beyond the garden.
Warm light touches the striped knit shirt, the ball surfaces and the upper edges of the hedges. Long shadows retain the texture of the turf. The near rail leads the eye from the corner pocket toward the two players, keeping the game and the surrounding landscape together in one generous outdoor view.
