Fox Ears at the Snowbound Bakery

Published · Updated

Baskets of bread climb almost to the ceiling in this warmly lit village bakery. Pale cloth edges fold over the wicker, making a repeating pattern above shelves of round and plaited loaves. Pumpkin-shaped buns fill the racks near the window, their divided crusts carrying a light dusting of flour. A great dark oven opens onto a golden glow, while the marble counter and terracotta panels hold the warmth in broad, quiet surfaces.

Outside, snow collects against the tall windows and a plough's lights shine through the blue night. Inside, a seated visitor waits beside a plate and mug. The woman behind the counter lifts her white cap, revealing small russet fox ears among her braided hair. Her unexpected silhouette is a detail to discover beneath the towering bread display. A little jukebox glows at the back of the room, and a cat sits near the foreground rug. Worn stone flooring, old wooden shelves and the soft baskets make the room feel settled and sheltered as the storm continues beyond the glass.
