Green Spiral Trees in the Winter Rotunda

Published · Updated

Seven green spiral trees hang at varied heights inside a tall brick rotunda. Each decoration is formed from a continuous widening strip, with open space between its turns. The largest hangs near the centre, its broad lower coils creating a clear silhouette against the windows. Small green spheres finish the suspended forms, while fine wires connect them to the timber roof above. The matte surfaces carry a subtle paper texture, with thin cut edges visible along the curves.

Soft winter daylight fills the room through tall arched windows. Outside, snow rests on bare branches and covers the ground, lending a pale backdrop to the dark green display. Within the rotunda, red brick piers rise towards a roof of radial timber beams, and a low stone bench follows the wall. The worn grey floor has a quiet, dry surface beneath the hanging forms. Open spacing allows the architecture to remain visible between the spirals, bringing together a simple cut-paper idea and the generous scale of the empty room.
