Ivory Paper Spindles in the Winter Cloister

Published · Updated

Oversized ivory paper decorations hang at different heights beneath the timber roof of a stone arcade. Each opens into a rounded honeycomb form before narrowing to a long, delicate point. The nearest spindle fills the upper part of the photograph, making the repeated folds and the fine edges of the paper clearly visible. Smaller forms lead the eye towards the dark wooden door at the far end.

Beyond the open arches, snow rests on clipped hedges, evergreen trees and the ledges of a quiet courtyard. Pale stone columns separate the cool outdoor light from a row of warm wall lanterns. Pots of winter greenery sit at the bases of the columns, while the worn paving carries a soft reflection from the lamps.

The contrast between fragile paper and heavy masonry gives the display its character. Cream folds, dark beams and fresh snow create a restrained winter palette, suited to a seasonal wallpaper or a feature about large handmade decorations.
