Gutter Ball Relay Crosses the Glass Retreat
Published · Updated
A gutter ball relay brings a family into a careful diagonal line inside a glass retreat. Each person holds one of four short blue channels, trying to join the ends before the yellow ball reaches the next gap. The youngest boy angles his section toward a wide wicker bowl. His sister watches the ball on her own section while their father and older brother keep the upper pieces steady.
The separate grips and small changes in height show how much cooperation the simple game needs. Olive, cream and turquoise clothes sit comfortably beside the girl's coral gingham dress, whose broad white collar carries floral embroidery. Their clear expressions range from concentration to amusement as they follow the same moving object.
Tall roof bars and transparent panels enclose a generous planted lounge. Hanging ferns, large palms and trailing leaves rise above pale sofas, patterned rugs and dark wooden tables. Small lamps remain tucked among the seating bays. Sunlight filters through the foliage and falls across the long plank floor, continuing into the garden doorway beyond. The richly furnished room gives their brief balancing challenge an inviting sense of space.
