The Harvest Platform Through the Window

Published · Updated

Through a modern train window, a commuter sees a village platform filled with the warmth of another age. Straw boaters, long skirts and lace blouses gather beneath a painted canopy. Baskets of apples and pumpkins sit beside benches, bicycles are dressed with corn garlands, and a brass band plays from a little pavilion. The man’s grey overcoat and the plain carriage fittings form a quiet foreground to the unexpected celebration.

Sunlight filters through the canopy glass and gilds the dry leaves beyond the platform. Cream columns with green bases and red trim support open circular brackets, their worn paint adding character to the setting. A horse waits behind the crowd, while tall trees dissolve into golden haze. Rain beads on the neighbouring carriage window, making the bright scene outside feel even further from the commuter’s ordinary journey. The tall composition holds both worlds together: cool modern upholstery and metal around the viewer, warm wood, wicker and autumn colour just beyond the glass. It is a passing view that seems to invite a much longer stay.
