The Scarecrow That Turned

Published · Updated

A line of handmade scarecrows stretches toward a dark barn beneath sagging lantern strings. Each figure wears a different collection of old clothes, with straw spilling from cuffs and hems. Closest to the path, a tall scarecrow in a patched blue coat appears to turn its cloth head toward the woman passing below. The simple stitched face remains unmistakably handmade, which makes its attentive angle all the more curious.

The woman carries a lantern beside her green wool coat and plaid skirt. Warm light catches her face and the dry straw underfoot, while moonlight leaves the field beyond cool and quiet. Pumpkins, hay bales and wooden poles hold the display together as an ordinary harvest celebration after the visitors have gone. The eye-level view follows the path into the distance, letting each small pool of light reveal another costume. Rough burlap, soft wool and faded patches give the scene a tactile character. Its strange moment happens within a familiar autumn display, rather than interrupting the stillness around it.
