Hemp Strands Travel Along the Ropewalk
Published · Updated
Hemp strands extend along the ropewalk toward a wooden guide held by a craft worker. Three separate lengths enter the block in front of her, while a thicker twisted rope continues along the supports behind. Her ochre dress and dark blue apron echo the warm brickwork and the shadows beneath the tall roof.
A second worker stands farther back beside a large spoked wheel. Repeated trestles and rows of high windows emphasize the remarkable length of the hall, giving the fibers a strong direction through the frame. Diagonal sunlight reveals loose hemp hairs, worn timber and uneven floor tiles. The photograph centers on a physical process and the steady attention needed to keep its materials organized.
