Two children play hopscotch on chalk squares in a striped plaza surrounded by curved coral, cream and blue concrete seating.

Hopscotch in the giant striped plaza

Published · Updated

The striped plaza gives a simple chalk game an unusually generous setting. A girl balances on one foot beside the pastel squares while a boy crouches farther along the course to retrieve a small marker. Their attention stays with the game. Her denim pinafore, floral sleeves and cream leggings stand out against his green striped shirt and dark trousers.

Broad curved seating rises behind them in alternating coral, cream and blue bands. Straight flights of steps cut through the concrete amphitheater, and slender metal railings follow the edges. The game occupies only a small part of the large open floor. Cracks, joints and slight variations in the painted surfaces keep the architecture tangible.

Long afternoon shadows stretch across the chalk squares and repeat the direction of the stairs. Trees line the upper rim, beyond which a low city and hazy hills appear. The vertical view follows the game from the foreground toward that distant horizon, holding the children and the sweeping public space together without losing the ordinary details of their turn.
