Inside the Birdcage Gazebo
Published · Updated
White iron bars rise around a woman in a deep green gown. She grips two uprights and looks beyond the cage, her face held in a narrow gap between the metal. Chipped paint, curling ironwork and ivy make the structure feel old and solid. Above her, the dome catches a hard pool of light; below, the skirt gathers into shadow. A carved pumpkin glows on a weathered stone plinth beside the entrance.
The garden behind her is less secure than it first appears. Tall painted hedge panels lean away from the path, exposing their thin edges and wooden supports. Through the opening stands the small silhouette of a gardener with a rake. Gravel continues toward him and then disappears into blackness. This Halloween scene turns a familiar garden shelter into a strange stage, where the scenery itself seems ready to leave. The portrait composition keeps the cage close while allowing the false garden to unfold beside it. It makes an atmospheric seasonal wallpaper or a dramatic night-garden print.
