Lantern boats gather beneath the enormous moon
Published · Updated
Lantern boats gather in loose groups across a dark water court. Each pale hull is built from visible paper folds, and warm light shines through the thin surfaces. Their pointed ends face different directions, breaking up the reflection into small islands of brightness. Fine ripples around the boats keep the water from becoming a perfect mirror.
An enormous glowing moon hangs above the far end of the court. Two stone pylons and visible suspension lines make its position part of the surrounding structure. The rounded surface carries gentle variations in brightness, with the material of the installation still apparent beneath the light. Broad steps and low terraces frame the water below.
Cool evening tones settle into the stonework, while the boats carry a warmer glow toward the foreground. There are no visitors in the frame, so the arrangement can be followed from the nearest folded prow to the suspended sphere. The photograph brings together the intimacy of a small paper object and the scale of a public celebration, held in the same quiet pool.
