A paper canyon fills the vaulted hall
Published · Updated
A paper canyon curves through the hall in a procession of enormous pleated walls. The nearest folds fill one side of the photograph, their pale surfaces revealing a fine fibrous texture. Farther along the passage, a woman peeks around an edge toward a man walking beside her. Their exchanged smiles add a small playful story to the otherwise monumental installation, and their scale makes the height of the paper easy to understand.
Low warm lights brighten the bases of the folds and send amber tones upward through the ivory surfaces. Narrow timber edging follows the floor, giving the installation a visible connection to the ground. Each turn exposes a different combination of deep shadow and illuminated ridge, so the simple folded material becomes a complex sequence of spaces.
A brick vault spans the hall overhead, with pale ribs and tall windows introducing another rhythm above the paper. Cool daylight from those windows balances the warmer glow below. The cobbled floor remains dark and uneven, contrasting with the precise vertical folds. This meeting of delicate paper and heavy old masonry gives the passage an unusual sense of both intimacy and grandeur.
