Lava Tree Molds Stand in the Fern Forest

Published · Updated

Lava tree molds rise from a dense fern forest, their broken rims opening toward the filtered daylight. The nearest formation has a broad dark hollow and a rough, uneven edge. Two narrower shapes stand farther back, partly enclosed by fresh green fronds. These hollow basalt columns give the small clearing an unusual vertical rhythm.

Dark pores and ridges cover the rock surfaces. Fine moss occupies some of the sheltered grooves, while scattered pale leaves rest near the bases. The casts remain visibly irregular: one widens at the lower edge, another ends in a sloping rim, and the closest opening has a deep shaded center. Their rough texture contrasts with the delicate repeated divisions of each fern.

A narrow strip of damp earth continues between the formations. Fallen brown leaves and small exposed roots keep the ground tangible beneath the foliage. Living trunks extend behind the dark columns into a layered canopy, where a pale gap admits soft light. With no people or built objects in view, the photograph concentrates on the contrast between lasting stone forms and the thick growth around them.
