One last swimming length before the lights dim
Published · Updated
After swimming a final length, a woman pauses at the tiled edge of a large indoor pool. Her hands rest naturally on the ledge, and her goggles sit above her forehead on a plain blue cap. Water beads on her face and shoulders as she looks up with a relaxed smile.
Red and white lane ropes lead across the turquoise water toward the far wall. Tall arched windows reveal the blue of evening, while warm lamps reflect in long broken lines on the surface. The spacious room surrounds the swimmer with quiet architecture, making the rest between lengths feel as present as the exercise that came before it.
