A squirrel leaps between the orchard pumpkins
Published · Updated
An orchard squirrel stretches toward the next pumpkin in a short leap through the harvest. Its front paws reach forward while the hind feet finish leaving the rounded surface behind. The raised tail forms a soft curve above its back, and fine russet fur stands out against the orange gourds. The small gap keeps the movement intimate and easy to follow.
The pumpkin harvest extends beneath apple trees into a hazy distance. Large ribbed gourds fill the foreground, their rough skins marked with soil, pale scratches and irregular green patches. Curled stems give each one a different silhouette. Smaller pumpkins in orange, yellow and muted green continue between the tree trunks, making a winding landscape at the squirrel's scale.
Moss and damp leaves sit close to the camera, while apples and yellowing foliage hang overhead. Soft cloudy light preserves the textures of fur, bark and pumpkin skin without harsh glare. The low viewpoint puts the viewer near the brief crossing and leaves room for the wider orchard. The scene joins a quick animal movement with the slower, settled abundance of an autumn harvest.
