Oxpeckers ride with a drinking rhinoceros
Published · Updated
Two oxpeckers ride with a drinking rhinoceros at the edge of a shallow waterhole. Their red bills and small brown bodies stand out against its folded gray skin, with one bird perched higher than the other. The rhinoceros lowers its broad muzzle to the water beneath a long curved front horn.
Small ripples spread from its lips and break the reflection of its head and legs. Golden grass covers the bank beyond, with scattered flat-topped trees under a softly clouded sky. Warm morning light reveals dry mud on the thick skin and damp footprints at the water's edge, keeping the tiny birds within the scale of their much larger companion.
