The Painted Ceramic City Fragments

Published · Updated

Irregular ceramic fragments spread across the pale wall of this garden room. Black brush lines and soft washes of ochre, rose and blue-grey describe a hillside town, with steps, tiled roofs, balconies and narrow doorways crossing the separate pieces. Broad gaps interrupt the painted scene and reveal the plaster behind it. The thick edges and fine surface cracks give each fragment the character of a handmade object.

A long walnut console sits beneath the mural, carrying a rounded cream vase, bare branches and a shallow bowl. Sunlight from the tall window passes across the ceramic and throws branch shadows onto the wall. Outside, terracotta pots and yellowing leaves continue the warm palette into a small courtyard. The photograph shows the whole arrangement, from the highest painted fragment to the dark stone floor. Its interest comes from the balance between a recognizable town scene and the open pattern of the broken shapes. This image suits collections of ceramic decoration, painted interiors and wall art that makes generous use of natural light.
