Long ceramic gallery with curved ivory plaster arches, cream patterned floor tiles, coloured vessels on wooden plinths and a far window seat.

The Ivory Ribbed Gallery

Published · Updated

A sequence of sculptural ivory arches gives this ceramic gallery its distinctive rhythm. The supports widen near the floor, then curve inward as they rise, joining the ceiling in smooth, softly lit surfaces. Openings between them lead into a quieter side room, while tall windows along the right admit bands of morning sun. The long view ends at an arched window with a cushioned seat beneath it, looking toward bare trees and pale hills.

Large ceramic vessels stand on simple dark wooden plinths between the arches. Their cobalt, ochre and cream glazes bring restrained colour into the otherwise pale space. Small pictures, leafy branches and a low bowl add further detail without competing with the architecture. The floor is formed from cream octagonal tiles, each with a dark four-petal motif and black corner inserts. Its worn, slightly reflective surface carries the window light along the room. This photograph brings curved plaster, patterned flooring and handmade pottery together in an interior with a generous sense of depth and stillness.
