Paper lanterns glow inside the blue ice vault

Published · Updated

Paper lanterns hang in a receding line beneath a tall ice vault. Their rounded cream and amber forms show fine horizontal ribs and vertical paper seams, with dark cords leading upward to a substantial timber beam. Each lantern gives a small warm pool of light rather than flooding the hall with a single color. The gentle brightness sits against the cool transparency of the surrounding ice.

Thick blocks form the lower walls and repeated openings along the passage. Bubbles, cloudy bands and uneven frozen surfaces interrupt the view through them. Clear chairs with broad curved arms rest on the packed snow floor, their heavy bases catching a few reflected highlights. Above, rough white snow forms the vaulted ceiling, retaining a soft texture distinct from the sharper blocks below.

A pale doorway at the far end draws the eye through the full length of the installation. Near the viewer, a dark blue ice edge provides a frame and a stronger sense of thickness. The photograph brings together thin paper, solid ice and loose snow, using their different responses to light to create depth through the quiet winter space.
