A thorny devil crosses the rippled sand
Published · Updated
A thorny devil crosses the rippled ochre sand with one front foot lifting. Conical spines cover its amber, cream and brown body, continuing along the tail that curves behind it. Dark facial markings frame the small eye beneath the pointed horns above its head.
The rounded spiny knob behind the head remains distinct from the face, while the near feet press into the loose surface. Sparse spinifex tufts stand farther across the dune beneath a clear blue sky. Low sunlight draws narrow shadows from the ridges of sand and the animal's pointed scales. The ground-level view gives the small lizard a clear place within the open dry landscape.
