A paternoster lift frames an amused exchange between two passengers at different heights. In one compartment, a man holds an ochre hat against his waistcoat and rests his other hand on the rail. In the neighboring opening, a woman in a deep green coat cradles a small potted fern and looks up toward him.

The open wooden lift keeps both figures separate within tall rectangular frames. Brass handles, patterned floor tiles and the stair beside them establish the heritage lobby around this brief encounter. A folded coat collar and the bright fern leaves add shape and color, while the different platform levels make the familiar sideways glance feel unexpected.
