A petanque court becomes the setting for a small moment of friendly suspense. A woman follows through after releasing a silver boule, while two friends watch with drinks in their hands. Her ivory dress has a finely pleated bodice and ruffled shoulders, paired with cobalt shoes that echo the blue chairs behind her.

Two resting boules and the little ochre jack give the gravel foreground a purpose. The airborne ball lies between the player's relaxed hand and the target, drawing the eye through the scene. A patterned ceramic pitcher, shaded folding table and open garden gate surround the game with ordinary details of an unhurried afternoon.
