A deep button in plum velvet upholstery

Published · Updated

Plum velvet upholstery gathers into deep folds as a craftswoman works beside a curved wooden chair. One hand steadies a covered button while the other holds the pale twine taut. Her blue floral blouse and moss-green apron echo the workshop's practical mix of pattern and texture, and the low working position brings her close to the unfinished seat.

The exposed frame and coarse webbing show how much of the chair is still being restored. Spare buttons, scissors and velvet offcuts lie nearby, with rolls of fabric standing behind her. Soft daylight catches the raised pile and leaves rich shadows in the folds, making the difference between the worn structure and fresh upholstery especially clear.
