Porcelain Hare at the Lighthouse Stair

Published · Updated

Worn red steps curl upward through a narrow lighthouse shaft, bordered by white iron balusters and a dark handrail. Their repeated shapes guide the eye towards a small porcelain hare waiting on the upper landing. The ornament's long ears stand against the pale wall beside a round window, where the moon shines through a blue night sky. Its quiet presence is easy to miss at first among the stair's many curves.

Lower down, warm lantern light throws the shadow of a capped keeper across the whitewashed masonry. The raised arm and hanging lantern stretch towards the hare, following the bend of the wall. A mustard coat hangs beside the doorway, and dried heather shares a little shelf with a pumpkin. Chipped paint, uneven plaster and the rubbed stair rail give the room a strong sense of age. Amber light gathers around the nearest steps while the top of the stair remains cool and blue. The image brings a small Halloween mystery into an otherwise practical, weathered interior.
